Before Any Other Twist in This Guide, Start Here

Vakrasana is the simplest seated twist in the practice, and the honest place to learn what lengthening before twisting actually feels like.

Before any other twist in this guide, start here. There's no sage attached to this name, no metaphor, just the shape itself, and that simplicity is exactly the point.

What the name is actually telling you

Vakra means twisted or curved, the simplest possible name for the simplest possible twist in this guide.

How to actually do it

Sit with the legs extended, bend the right knee and place the right foot outside the left knee or thigh. Sit tall, inhale to lengthen, exhale to twist toward the right, left hand outside the right knee, right hand grounded behind for support. Repeat on the other side.

Learn "lengthen before you twist" here first

This is deliberately the entry point before Ardha Matsyendrasana, the same rotational idea with fewer variables to manage, which makes it the honest place to actually learn what lengthening the spine before adding rotation feels like, before that same principle gets applied to every deeper twist that follows it in this practice.

Precaution and contraindication

Keep the extended leg active, foot flexed, rather than letting it go passive and collapse. Lengthen the spine fully before adding any rotation.

Avoid or modify with spinal disc issues, recent abdominal surgery, or during pregnancy without guidance.

The science involved

As the most basic seated twist in this guide, this pose is where the fundamentals of safe spinal rotation actually get learned, generating the twist from the base of the spine upward, keeping the spine long rather than compressed, before those same fundamentals get applied to every deeper twist that follows it here.

This is one of the first five Twisting poses in the Beginner's Guide to Yoga Asana. Once this feels steady, Ardha Matsyendrasana is the natural next step.
