The Gentlest Twist in This Guide Is Also the One You Can Do at a Desk
Bharadvajasana asks so little of the hips and knees that it can genuinely be practiced daily. Here's how to actually practice this accessible seated twist.

This is the gentlest twist in this guide, and it happens to be the one that fits into an ordinary day the most easily, which is not incidental.
What the name is actually telling you
This pose is named for the sage Bharadvaja, one of the great rishis of Vedic tradition, credited with deep contributions to yogic and medical knowledge.
How to actually do it
Sit with both legs bent to one side, feet resting beside the opposite hip, sit bones grounded evenly even though the legs aren't. Inhale to lengthen the spine, exhale to twist toward the legs, one hand grounding behind for support, the other resting on the opposite knee or shin. Repeat to the other side, with the legs folded in the mirrored direction.
The twist that fits into a normal day
For students practicing mostly online, mostly sitting far more hours than any studio class would ever have them sit, a twist this gentle and this accessible is often more valuable than a deeper one they'll never actually do consistently. A gentle twist practiced daily does more for spinal health over time than a deep one practiced rarely.
Precaution and contraindication
Keep the sit bones grounded evenly, don't let the twist lift one hip off the ground to fake more rotation. Keep the movement gentle and slow rather than forcing a deeper turn.
Avoid or modify with knee injury, since both knees are folded to one side under some load. Use caution with spinal disc issues.
The science involved
Like every twist in this guide, this pose mobilizes spinal rotation and gently compresses and releases the abdominal organs to support digestion, but its real value is accessibility, it asks so little of the hips and knees compared to a deeper seated twist that it can genuinely be practiced daily.
This is one of the first five Twisting poses in the Beginner's Guide to Yoga Asana. Supta Matsyendrasana offers a similarly gentle twist from lying down instead.
